fun in the sun

UPDATE FROM THE BEACH…

IT IS SO WINDY HERE THAT JULIA CANNOT KEEP HER SUN HAT ON. GOOD THING I KEEP SUNSCEEN IN THE SWIM BAG. YOU SEE, I AM NOT ANTI SUNSCREEN. I AM FOR PROTECTING KIDS. ONE OF THE WAYS OUR FAMILY CHOOSES TO PROTECT OUR KIDS BY MAKING SURE THAT THE PRODUCTS WE PUT ON AND IN OUR KIDS ARE DOING MORE GOOD THAN HARM.

JEN ADDED A GREAT LINK IN HER COMMENT ON THIS POST OF A PLACE TO CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR SUNSCREEN IS SAFE. WE WAIT ALL WINTER LONG TO SOAK UP SOME NATURAL VITAMIN D, SOMETHING CONVENTIONAL SUNSCREENS BLOCK. IF YOU HAVE FOUND A GREAT SITE THAT PROVIDES GOOD INFO ON SUNSCREEN PLEASE SHARE!

AND NOW I AM GOING TO GO JOIN MY KIDDOS IN A SEARCH FOR THE MISSING TORPEDO!

We've spent the last couple of Sundays at the beach. It's not even Memorial Day yet! It's always more fun when friends come over to splash in our lake and at the rate we're going, Sam and Julia are going to be as blonde as Brianna by the end of summer!

We do use sun hats during the dangerous parts of the day (11-3) but avoid sunscreen and it's harmful ingredients as much as possible. The kids start off the season with very fair skin but we slowly build up to longer stretches in the sun as they tan. I'm not saying I won't use sunscreen ever again - typically I only pull it out early on in the season when they will be exposed for longer than 1 hour between 11-3.

What methods do you use for sun protection?

  1. I just bought some Nature's Gate sunscreen at Whole Foods, thinking it wouldn't have that bad stuff in it. It has less than other brands but still is rated "moderate risk" on cosmeticsdatabase.com.

You can get some, though, that are considered safe: http://www.ewg.org/cosmetics/report/sunscreen09/findyoursunscreen?query=&ptype=&brand_id=

  2. I think that's pretty irresponsible not using sunscreen for your children. Have you ever talked with a dermatologist or a physician about it? Do you keep your children inside then?

  3. I was gonna look at the cosmetic database and order some. I hate spending the so much money for it though. I may just wait till it's consistently nice weather up here. I am like you though, I don't like putting that stuff on them unless we're going to the zoo or staying outside all day. Otherwise, they're usually inside during the hottest part of the day: Eating lunch, moms nap time :) and the kids quiet time. Luckily I don't worry about it too much.

  4. You are so good. I forgot sunscreen today. The kids were in the pool ALL day, when they weren't hunting butterflies, and they are fried. I feel so bad. Out comes the sunscreen....a little late. :(

  5. Like you, I only use it at the beginning of the season during the worst part of the day. And this year I am making the big switch to organic, "healthy" sunscreens. I promise. ;)

We do not use hats as much as we should... perhaps I should be on the hunt for hats today.

Enjoy the day and all the vitamin D!

  6. we did coconut oil all last summer and our kids never burned once. Started it again this summer. I was going to get the avino brand sunscreen to keep in the van (coconut oil melts in the heat and thus I don't keep it in my van) but I just saw a comercial this morning that they use soybeans in it... well, we don't do ANY soy so I will have to research a differnt brand. Oh well. (I know you asked me last year about the coconut oil but I never got the time to research it, it just works for us and so I use it.) Have an amazing day.

me again, in the above article it talks about it being used for sunscreen along with so much more... We don't eat it, we use it instead of lotion, on cuts and scrapes, as sunscreen ect. (it can be eaten but I buy the organic and it is too expensive to use it to cook for a family of seven. a little bit goes a long way on the skin)

  8. We used Tru Kid sunscreen last summer because it is paraben free, but I can't find it this year, even online. Instead we are using Burt's Bees sunscreen. we are a bunch of white skinned blue eyed people...snug and #1 tan, but Little Monkey and I fry very easy. I'll have to check out your sites and see if there are other options to try! Thanks

"How can I help?"

So many have asked how they can help MckMama and her family during this difficult time and so I've set up a Care Calendar to help coordinate meals for the family. MckMama is coordinating childcare on her end, but you can contact me for the rest. Please leave me a comment in this message and I will contact you with more information on the Care Calendar as soon as I am able. Please be sure I can get in touch with you through your blog and/or an email address. Thank you for covering my dear friend and her family with prayers!

Elsa's Birth Story

The morning of July 1st started out like all the other mornings this summer. The kids let me sleep until 7:30 and then came in to wake me up. We ate breakfast and I started picking up around the house. We had spent the previous day at the town pool and because the heat index was going to be just as high again we made plans to go to our beach. The kids really wanted to practice their swimming skills but I didn't want to have to pay for the pool again. At 8:30 I lost my mucus plug and my brain started running a mile a minute. Could this mean we're getting close? Could I actually go early for a change?I turned to Google and learned that labor could be hours or days away. I feel I should warn you - if you decide to Google mucus plug be prepared to see photographic proof. Why people felt the need to post pictures to Google images is beyond me!  Moving on..... Just in case I ended up being one of the lucky ones who only had hours to wait until labor started I kept up with my clean...

Shabby Apple Giveaway!

Spring is in the air and that means it's time to start thinking about changing over our closets from Winter to Spring. I don't know about you, but that also means it's time to look for a few new pieces to bring new life to what I wear year after year. Today I can make that job a little more fun for you because Shabby Apple is sponsoring a giveaway on my blog! Yeah!!!! I had so much fun looking through their collection of women's dresses and don't even get me started on their adorable line of little girl's dresses ! It's a whole new ballgame for me now that I'm going to have TWO girls to dress. In the end I decided to pick this beauty called Azure Coast to giveaway to one lucky reader because us mom's are always buying things for our kids before ourselves. I just might have to pick up one for myself in time to wear for BabyBear's baptism this summer. It's perfect for nursing moms! Want to win one for yourself? See below , but if you d...
