When the weather outside is frightful

In bear country the mercury is buried far down in the thermometer most days for months on end. The upside is that we get to eat this yummy chili often. We've been perfecting our recipe for a few years and this winter we've found just the right combination of spices and tomatoes.

If you like your chili
chunky,
light on the beans,
spicy but not too spicy,
and to feed about 8-10 people
then this is the chili for you:

Bear Country Chili

2 pounds ground beef
4 stalks chopped celery
1 diced green pepper
1 chopped onion
7 cloves garlic
1 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
1 14 oz can diced tomatoes
(with green chilis)
1-2 cups water
4 T. Worcestershire sauce
1 T salt
4 T sugar
7 T chili powder
1 t dried oregano
1 t ground cumin
1 can of dark red kidney beans, drained

Brown hamburger, drain fat.
Put all ingredients in a crockpot.
Add water until desired consistency is reached.
Cook on low for 10 hours or high for 6 hours.

  2. I'm still working on perfecting ours, too. A friend gave me a Chili Cookbook - can you imagine all of those recipes?

I just found out last year, after 21 years of marriage, that my husband likes his chili thin and sweet like Wendy's! I always had made it thick and spicy! I put corn in mine.

Hard to imagine harsh weather today. I was just out on the deck and you still don't need a coat. But the colder days will visit us this week.

  4. Is this the recipe where you might have put in a tad bit too much salt?

I'm going to have to try this one and I'm going to follow your blog and see what other mischief you get in!

  5. I was trying to print your chili receipe when I got a message which said "protected image cannot be saved." I printed your blog page to get the receipe, but can you please e-mail me and tell me how to do that. I would really like to add that protection on my blog. Thanks!

Shabby Apple Giveaway!

Spring is in the air and that means it's time to start thinking about changing over our closets from Winter to Spring. I don't know about you, but that also means it's time to look for a few new pieces to bring new life to what I wear year after year. Today I can make that job a little more fun for you because Shabby Apple is sponsoring a giveaway on my blog! Yeah!!!! I had so much fun looking through their collection of women's dresses and don't even get me started on their adorable line of little girl's dresses ! It's a whole new ballgame for me now that I'm going to have TWO girls to dress. In the end I decided to pick this beauty called Azure Coast to giveaway to one lucky reader because us mom's are always buying things for our kids before ourselves. I just might have to pick up one for myself in time to wear for BabyBear's baptism this summer. It's perfect for nursing moms! Want to win one for yourself? See below , but if you d...

My Birthday Wish

Today is my 33rd birthday. So far I've celebrated by cleaning the kitchen, vacuuming, and washing clothes. My birthday happened to fall on a Monday - the day we set a few hours aside for me to do some of the cleaning that I just don't have time for during the work week. I love it. I get that immediate sense of accomplishment. I see results. I finished a task. Oh how that makes my heart happy!!!!! In my line of work it can be months before I can check a project off my list. All the while it nags at me and weighing me down like a ton of bricks that projects are waiting for me. Don't get me wrong, I love love love my job, but I also love that instant gratification that comes with checking something off my list. So when Mondays roll around I am happy to pick up my dust cloth or a basket of laundry....even on my birthday. I don't have any great birthday reflections for today....maybe another day. Instead I want to share my birthday wish with you dear readers. What I wan...

New shampoo for a new year!

Happy New Year from BearCountry! We are in the middle of a cold snap where the temps spend more time below zero than above. That means hats and gloves every.single.time we walk out the door for even the shortest trip. Thankfully we’ve been able to avoid catching any of the lice that has been making the rounds in our school district because keeping up with regular laundry is hard enough - let alone washing outerwear too!  Research has shown that tea tree oil repels lice and so we’ve been using a tea tree oil shampoo from Maple Holostics  this winter to give us every advantage against those annoying buggers!  Our family has fine hair so we have to be careful to use hair products that don’t weigh our hair down with build up. It is important to us that products we put on our skin are safe and not full of chemicals or sulfates. That is why when Maple Holostics contacted me about reviewing one of their products I didn’t hesitate to volunteer. I didn’t tell anyone in our family...
